Camp Taringatura, built in the 50's by the Presbytarian Church, is set on beautiful 15 acres at the banks of the Dipton Stream- in the heart of New Zealand's Greatest Province Southland!  

 

Unlike many places you will stay in New Zealand, Camp Taringatura is not in a town. The Camp lies in the heart of the Rural Country side,  surrounded by Native Bush with some of the last remnants of Southland Plains Podocarp Forests. Only 1% of these Ancient Forests remain.

Awaiting you is a friendly home away from home in peaceful idyllic surroundings with beautiful sunrises and fantastic sunsets topped with a little lure of Adventure!

After a good nights sleep you will awake to the enticing call of resident birds.

 

There are lots of things to do for the travelling: walking, hiking, bird watching, swimming at the Dipton Stream in water holes and the big Oreti River - both of which are right at your door step. Local guides can assist you with fly fishing.

The Southland is a Fly Fishers dream come true. There are numerous streams, rivers, and lakes. The Oreti beach is close by and great for kiting of all kinds,  floundering and four-wheel driving. Cantering along the beach on horseback is the cause of constant smiles! Rock climbing with arranged private access to Castle Rock is 23 km away, with a choice of approximately 50 Routes to climb! Castle Downs rock climbing area has good scope for top-roping beginners and leading. There is also huge potential for bouldering! Take enough water and food for the day with you. 

The area of Camp Taringatura is great to start out for Game spotting early mornings - have your camera ready and lunch prepared! 

There are local Jet boat tours, Sheep FarmsDairy Farm  "milk a cow" tours :) and Honey Farms, where If you have the luck to be there at the right time - you can witness the honey being freshly extracted from the honeycomb. 

 

These are a few things we love to do around here and they are easily organised.

 

Any time is a good time for lighting the Camp fire! Hitting up some sausages on a stick or putting your fresh caught Trout wrapped in alfoil onto the coals... oh yes!

Here's an easy but reliable recipe: Herb the fish with fresh Camp rosemary, salt and pepper then drizzle with lemon and say eatyalater :) just 15- 20 minutes

 

The Camp itself has a 260 m2  pleasant feel main hall  comfortably seating 150 guests. There is a piano, microphone and amplifier to use (please apply for, before day of arrival). 

The hall has a large serving window and 2 doors connecting our commodious kitchen area and walk-in storage room with everything you need:  offering 2 spacious fridges, three ovens, 6 sinks, many cupboards with pots, pans, cutlery, glasses, cups, saucers, plates etc.. There are also washing machines and a dryer for your convenience.

 

There is plenty of room for indoor activities! There are Couches. Play games and make music - warm yourself and cozy up by the fire.

Winton is a 15km drive away to get groceries and supplies needed for your stay. Dont forget drinking water !Lemonades will not hydrate! Drop in to the bakery and get a hold of some freshly baked bread mmm.

If you are travelling solo or with others, you will meet friends and have a jolly time with us!  They say the days seem longer out here - and they are!

In Summer it is daylight until around 11pm

Ha! What to do first in the morning? There are so many cool things! Step out the door and you will be at the  beautiful fishing hatcherie Dipton stream, take a picknick basket of goodies and a blanket. If you skip across our neighbouring farm you will be thrilled to find yourself at the Oreti river.  Its real good jet boating, swimming with rubber tyres or try your luck and catch some fish to put on the barby!

The Oreti River is a popular boating and fishing spot and just 9 kms down the road is a boat launching ramp.

 

 

 

Nearby is Castle Rock. Access onto the private property can be arranged.(It is a 25 min drive) About 50 trails are waiting to be conquered!

Some  have only a single top bolt anchor, Grades are 12 to 23, Cliff Heights 5 to about 25 m and the Rock Type is limestone. Protection - Fixed (Bolts).
